Work through each category using your best estimates — your annual electricity usage in kWh (from your energy bill), your average weekly driving distance, how many return flights you take each year, and roughly how meat-heavy your diet is. The calculator adds up the emissions from each category and shows you a total annual carbon footprint in tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e), alongside a comparison to the UK, European, and global averages.
The average UK carbon footprint is approximately 5–6 tonnes of CO₂e per person per year when counting direct lifestyle emissions (production, consumption, and services are higher). The global average is around 4.7 tonnes. Climate scientists estimate that to keep warming below 1.5°C, individual footprints need to fall to approximately 2.5 tonnes per person by 2030. Emission factors used in the calculator are based on published data from DEFRA (the UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and the International Energy Agency. These factors convert physical quantities — kWh of electricity, kilometres driven, grams of meat per week — into kilograms of CO₂ equivalent by accounting for the full greenhouse gas composition (CO₂, methane, nitrous oxide) of each activity. The CO₂e metric allows all greenhouse gases to be compared on a common scale based on their global warming potential over 100 years relative to CO₂.
CO₂e is a unit that expresses the global warming impact of different greenhouse gases in terms of the equivalent mass of CO₂ that would have the same warming effect over 100 years. For example, methane is about 28 times more potent than CO₂ over 100 years, so 1 tonne of methane = 28 tonnes of CO₂e. Using CO₂e allows all greenhouse gases to be compared and summed on a single scale.
The average UK per-person lifestyle carbon footprint (covering home energy, transport, flights, and food) is approximately 5–6 tonnes of CO₂e per year. Including the embedded emissions of goods and services consumed (imported goods, government spending, healthcare, etc.) pushes the full consumption-based footprint closer to 11–12 tonnes.
To be consistent with limiting global warming to 1.5°C, scientists estimate individual footprints need to reach around 2.5 tonnes of CO₂e per person per year by 2030, and close to 0.7 tonnes by 2050 (net zero). These are challenging targets that will require both individual action and systemic changes in energy, transport, and food systems.

Carbon offsets — paying for verified projects that reduce or remove CO₂ elsewhere (reforestation, methane capture, clean cookstoves) — can help neutralise unavoidable emissions. Look for offsets certified under Gold Standard or Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). However, reducing emissions at source is always more certain than offsetting, and critics note that some offset projects have not delivered the promised reductions. Experts recommend reducing first, then offsetting what remains.
